(PSA) Ionic Does Not Have an acceptable Native Maps Solution

This is not a question. It’s a PSA to anyone who is looking at moving forward with building an Ionic app that implements Maps libraries. The support for native maps is in a very poor state.

The only “real” option is to continue to use Cordova. You have the option to use this package GitHub - mapsplugin/cordova-plugin-googlemaps: Google Maps plugin for Cordova, which hasn’t received an update in over 2 years and is not compatible with Capacitor. The maintainer says he’s working on a capacitor version and has received plenty of donations [Fundraising: Support for Capacitor iOS platform (クラウドファンディングのお願い) · Issue #2781 · mapsplugin/cordova-plugin-googlemaps · GitHub]. However, there is nothing made publicly available and I haven’t received an update, even though I provided a donation, in months.

While there is one library, GitHub - capacitor-community/capacitor-googlemaps-native: Capacitor Plugin using native Google Maps SDK for Android and iOS., it’s far from a production ready state at this point. However there has been lots of positive conversation and it appears to be moving forward. :crossed_fingers:

Would the Ionic / Capacitor team please considering stepping in to help the community solve this issue as it is a core piece of functionality that is very often needed in mobile applications?
