Technical difference between "ionic run" and "ionic build"?

But what is the technical difference between those two? In my case, ionic run ios works as expected but ionic build ios results white screen of death – after bootsplash iOS Simulator seems to get stuck and prints no error in Safari Inspector or XCode console.

So, to solve this problem, it would be remarkably useful to know, what ionic run ios does in addition to just building and launching the app. Does someone have any relevant information or ideas?
